Adapted from the Moto support site: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/97329/p/30,6720,9050

1. With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.

2. The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS

3. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select
Tip: If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.

4. The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)

5. Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key
Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and Vol Down key, and start the process again.

6. The device will display additional menu options (Text will appear in BLUE)

7. Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option.

8. When complete, select reboot system now.

You will not lose any personal data with this process.

Step 5 has now changed if you have Android 5 (Lollipop).

From How to clear cache partition on Moto G and Moto X after Android Lollipop update? - Moto G Phone Guide

============
Once you get the dead Android, you must:

1. press and hold power button for 4-5 seconds
2. without releasing power button, press volume up button
3. release the power button and volume up buttons

You should get the recovery mode menu

Note: this step is different from that in KitKat or Jelly Bean.

I still found it tricky and had to try several times.

In the end what is the point in clearing your cache?

Perhaps if you read the link might give you a clue.

In simple terms it ensures that any residual crap which may possibly be left behind from the the previous OS is cleared out of the system preventing any possible conflicts slowing things down etc.

Being a perfectionist I do a full reset both before and after an update. The former is probably totally unnecessary but the latter gives me peace of mind.

Cache wipe takes 10-15 min, and as now Lollipop optimises all apps for ART only I would personally recommend it.

I just wiped the cache. Everything works perfectly now. One must be a fool not to do that !
