Calendar Notifications pop up randomly?

Maybe I just don't understand how calendar notifications work, but every once in a while, I pick up my phone and a whole bunch of calendar notifications pop up. I clear all because most are now totally irrelevant. I think I usually get notified on the current appts as well. But I am just getting a little annoyed having all these old calendar notifications pop up randomly. They are worthless.

One other quick thought/question. I try to use Google reminder to remind myself to do something. The notification is so passive that I have no idea it is even there. Nothing really "reminds" me.

Just annoying... otherwise, still loving the phone.
