Call Waiting Screen Issue

I have had this happen a dozen or so times. I'll be on a phone call and someone will call in. I'll pull the phone away from my face, to see who is calling in. The bottom three buttons will light up, but the screen will not. Also I do not have any screen protectors on. Has anyone else seen this?
