calling an arbitrary RESTful service from App Inventor?

I'd like to call a RESTful service to retrieve some values for use in my App Inventor project. Is there a way to do this? If not, are there plans for this?

Or, alternatively, is there a way that I can build my own block(s)? Is the source for the block editor public?

I'd like to use this in a teaching environment. Having a general purpose RESTful service processor block would add tons of functionality to App Inventor, IMO.
