Calling contacts from phone app

Coming from a Blackberry where I can just start typing a contact's name in the phone application, I am wondering if that is possible on the Evo since there is no QWERTY keyboard. All the pics/videos I've seen of the phone dialer have just a numeric keypad. Would I have to go to the contact app to dial?

You start typing the name in the numeric keypad. One key per letter, it'll figure it out based on the letters on that number.

Didn't I see an app somewhere where you can gesture (draw the letters on the screen) and it will pull up your address list for that letter?

does this ring a bell?

my wife's got the moment (2.1) and i just start typing the name of the contact and it finds it. just like universal search pretty much..

That is great if the EVO has the same feature. I love being able to just type a name and the contact comes up to be able to call that person instead of having to go through all the contacts

If it doesn't do that with the stock app then I would go with Dialer One which lets you search by typing a person's name.

The Evo will be my first Android phone so I'm not sure exactly how these things are divided up, but wouldn't that sort of feature be an Android feature as opposed to a HTC one? Would it be phone model dependent?

The stock phone app lets you search contacts using the numeric keypad; basically it's the same old crappy T9 search you get on a $19 disposable cell phone.

But if you go to People, you can do a true alpha search, and then dial the number you want from there. Just as easy as the dialer, and more versatile.

My biggest disappointment is that it only searches names, not company names. If I type I-B-M I'd like it to list all my contacts with IBM in the company name. There's an alternate dialer called TakePhone that does this, but TakePhone doesn't yet have alpha keyboard support.

Universal Search - another thing webOS has that I'll be missing. :(

The Evo has universal search, in fact more "universal" than the Pre. Just hit the magnifying glass capacitive button from the home screen and type away.

It will bring up contacts, apps, text messages, and emails based on what you type.

Its simple just
1) power on
2) unlock
3) from the home screen tap the magnifying glass
4) type the name

Yeap! Couldn't be simpler. Don't even have to open the phone or contact app for this, works from any screen or from almost any app you happen to be in; just tap the magnifying glass and type the first few letters of the person you want to call.
