Camera apps and ultra pixels - how well do they work

Random question. I got an htc one, and love it, but not sure I love the camera. I take a lot of outdoor pics of dogs, or out hiking and stuff. One thing I was wondering, is how well the htc one camera works with third party camera apps? I had read that the google edition of the htc one had issues with the camera quality, since the stock camera app didn't know how to deal with the ultra pixel camera. This led me to wonder, how does this translate to third party camera apps, like the HDR apps, Instagram, paper camera, etc. Any degradation of quality using those? I know I can download and test myself, but curious what others thought.

Also, any recommendations for a good camera app that converts pictures into cartoon like images? I have paper camera, but curious if there is something like the samsung camera app, s camera, that had a lot more filters and distortions to turn images into very colorful cartoons / comics.

I use Camera FV-5 and I really like it.

I actually really like the camera on the ONE. I will be the first to say that it can be very hit and miss when it comes to outdoor shots, they are either really good or really crappy. When I had my one I converted it to the Google play edition and there was a slight degrade in photo quality but not enough to be a deal breaker. I also tried some 3rd party camera apps like camera fx and it was the same story.

The camera is very good, specially when in good light. Macro shots are awesome and it's one of the strengths of the One. Sadly, taking pics on low light is very hit and miss as the camera hunts too much trying to focus and results in either blurry or missed shots. HTC should have incorporated a focus-assisting lamp like Nokia did with the Lumia 9xx and 1020 phones. It really helps their camera achieve proper focus quickly.

I normally just use the stock camera app and edit with Smoothie (great photo app). I've tried Camera FV-5 and it works well but I would like a better interface. Snap Camera HDR has nice features too and also works well.
