do we have any camera experts who would be willing to give a quick "how to" lesson on how to maximise our camera's potential?
 
Unfortunately, though there are a few settings available, there really isn't too much you can do regarding the camera itself. The lower the ISO number the better, but turn it down too far and the long shutter time will result in blurry shots due to motion. Poor lighting is the bane of any camera, but especially cell phone cameras.

Practice using different angles to maximize the amount of light on your subject. You'll learn how the camera "sees" as it's much different to your eye. Something may look plenty bright to you, but the camera needs much more light to take a good photo.
