Camera deleted entire /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera directory. How can I retrieve deleted photos?

Phone is rooted with Magisk.
Have tried Tenorshare. Its specs say phone does not have to be rooted, but when I try it, it complains that the phone is not rooted even though it is, and clicking the "Advanced" button opens a browser page on Kingoroot.
Also tried MiniTool Mobile Data Recovery for Android. It does not even recognise that the phone is connected by USB with USB debugging turned on.

This subject area seems to be full of sharkware.
Has anyone had any joy here?
