Camera: G4 vs. iPhone 6

Every time I my daughter asks why I needed another phone, I say "this one has a better camera." Then she pulls out her iPhone 6 and I just can't believe what they can do with their cameras and yet the specs aren't even close. Their colors are just so spot on. Iphone 6 is the first, my G4 is the second. And mine rotates all the time when I share. Guess MP are too high.

Re: The Camera.....

I feel like this Camera in the G4 was meant to be used in manual mode. With just auto mode, the iPhone wins. But with manual, you can really set up a fantastic shot. Just gotta learn how to set up those shots fast enough to where. It isn't a hassle.

Yeah. I have messed around with manual but when you want an action shot you have to increase shutter speed then the ISO has to be adjusted, etc. I haven't quite mastered that yet.

For photo rotation, check out this thread: http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=538933

Interesting that the iPhone photo is oriented correctly - I'm guessing that either the iPhone 6 has stopped using the same exif rotation as the iPhone 5c (the phone my wife has) or something happened during the process of getting that photo from the iPhone to this post.

Anyways, please read through that thread to get at least a better understanding of the rotation issue.

For iPhone vs g4 auto photos, I have to agree with you. However, the 8mp vs 16mp should give you some comfort... You can do either a decent zoom or post-shot crop that you can't do on the iPhone.

I've taken some decent auto photos, but my real pleasure comes from the manual camera - the shots are nearly as good as my DSLR.

Re: The Camera.....

Yeah..that comparison is really telling, sadly. I am a bit disappointed in the camera so far, although I still like it when compared to my Nexus 5 (but that's an obvious bump up in quality).

As for the rotation thing... http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg...after-sharing-sending-them-4.html#post4513525
TL;DR the two solutions at the moment seem to be:
1) Use a different camera app instead of the stock LG one, or
2) Re-save the photos in something like Quickpic, then send them.

I'm hoping LG pushes a software update out for the damn camera software that fixes this ridiculousness.

Re: The Camera.....

I will read the thread on the rotation. It is properly oriented on my phone, it just turns that way when I attach. I recently used the phone for a garage door website and I tried to use the pic but it was too large so it turned it sideways. When I cropped the pic it showed correctly.

Re: The Camera.....

In no way shape or form do I personally see the IPhone 5ç is even in the smallest way better than the G4.

Top Pic- 5c

Bottom is -G4

Both Auto shots (no editing).

I understand that the iPhone 6 has really improved on the camera side of things. My wife's 5c is OK, but lacks at times.

Still, the G4 auto mode is very good in certain circumstances.

Here is a photo I took, right after reading this post this morning, of my sweet sleeping coonhound. Fully automatic, very tricky light.

This is a close crop of the same photo, showing off the G4's outstanding focus and high resolution:

Having used the iPhone 6 plus, I can say that the iPhone works well in almost all situations. The g4 works well in good lighting, but in limited lighting, it can struggle sometimes

Re: The Camera.....

The OP's comparison looks horrid! A lot of older digital cameras had trouble with proper Auto white balance on indoor shots under incandescent lighting. My old camera made everything look orange unless I chose the dedicated Incandescent setting. Hopefully LG will have an update to calibrate the sensor to fix the color cast issue. Blech!!

Do your manual pics come out grainy or noisy? Here is a shot of my sister's dog running. It captured it well without blur, but has a lot of noise on the image. Sorry for the sideways pic.

I shoot with low ISO even in darker situations. Its something I have to compensate for after the fact. I never take a picture expecting to IMMEDIATELY send it to someone. I'll go back into my gallery later and use Snapseed to brighten, saturate, and detail (structure/sharpening) a picture until its something I like. That's kind of the point of all the settings in manual mode. its very similar to a DSLR in terms of settings and I'll throw the raw dng files from this phone into Lightroom like I would a photo off my full size camera to edit it in a way that makes it look great.

If it was twilight then you can expect noise - the camera has essentially increased the iso to compensate, and there's not much you can do unless you have the speed turned down real low in the manual camera and you use something to steady the phone.

Tough to know what the original lighting was, but a little under exposed is better than over. Colors look a lot better than the OP's ballpark shot...remember people, this is not a DSLR, no matter how much reviews like to tease it, and the dog was moving ;-).
I messed with the lighting and sharpened it just a touch. The photo I was able to save after opening it is only 115kb, so zooming much turns to pixel mush...183446d1435194546-camera-g4-vs-iphone-6-7532.jpg

Thanks. Even if it was a DSLR, I wouldn't be wise enough to know what I was doing. (not yet anyway). :) I only added the comment about the dog running because an auto mode shot had blur and I felt like the manual captured his movement nicely. It was 854 pm EST so it wasn't very bright but still light enough.

Re: The Camera.....

DSLR will have a bigger sensor and better optics, so even in Auto, they will have more dynamic range and flexibility to get tough lighting shots. I'm amazed at how well these tiny cameras do...we're getting so spoiled ;-).
