Maybe I'm missing something, so any advise would be appreciated. When I am taking photos they all seem to be about 1-2MB, I have checked all of the settings and there does not appear to be a setting for taking higher res images, there is a setting for HD Video but I cannot locate a setting for the camera. Any suggestions or does the camera take the image and set the resolution based on the lighting etc.

Thanks again for any help.

The pictures are jpg which is a compressed format.

Your image resolution is 4 megapixels and that file size is about right for a 4 megapixel image. This smaller file size is also a big advantage that some people haven't picked up on yet. Yes you do lose image resolution with the fewer pixels of a 4 megapixel camera, but you gain smaller files that are much faster to record, read, and share. This makes the camera and gallery much quicker and more responsive. This is one reason that ZOE can presently exist.

Excellent, thank you. Yes I would not want to have a huge image files since you would not be able to send as easily as the smaller ones without resizing prior to sending.
