Camera Setting

So I read an article that suggested that the new iPhone doesn't necessarily take better pictures. They claim that the way the camera's settings are in default it ups contrast and brightness to make images more pleasing (if not necessarily accurate). Basically, it does some of what an artist would do in photoshop after talking a photo. They also suggest that the way the screen is setup with contrast and brightness and whatnot it really highlights the pictures well (again, not necessarily the quality of the photo but the effect is to be more pleasing).
So... with that being said: does anyone know enough about cameras to suggest settings that will improve basic default picture taking? I know that there are a million conditions that require different settings. But, what's best for default?

Generally, the default is good for default pictures. If you're not willing to tweak for each situation, there's no reason to play with it.
