Is there any way to mute not only the shutter sound; but also the lock sound it makes for the focus? Any app or anything to do it in case there isnt a built in feature on the stock camera app?

No Dice, still waiting its probably going to require root also. Several threads on this topic says this originates from the original sgs2 & laws in china that requires all cameras to make a flash sound...

On my current Android phone, I silence the shutter by downloading Audio Manager from the market, and turning System Volume all the way down to nothing.

Tried but doesn't work with the Epic 4G Touch. It's not tied to any of the volume settings.

Alright guys, I've been calling and emailing around trying to find a legit (no rooting) solution to this. Nobody I've found yet has given me a good answer (although sprint tech support was helpful and really tried). Oh and by the way, the AT&T variant allows you to turn off the noise. This might even just have been an oversight on the Sprint version!

So here's what we're gonna do. Make this a vocal problem.

Sprint email support:
Email Us
Sprint support phone:
888-211-4727

Samsung email support:
Get Downloads, Firmware, Manuals and Software for Samsung SPH-D710ZKASPR (link on page)
Samsung phone support:
1-888-987-HELP
Samsung twitter support (here's the option to make our complaint really visible)
Twitter
and more specifically
Twitter
Tweet at both of them! Get the message out there!

Always be polite, but explain your frustration. Explain that you take pictures in places where noise is distracting and rude like museums, or in an office. Neither Sprint nor Samsung from what I've found has had any reason for this, they just say "it's not a supported feature".

Take the time. Make the calls. Send the emails. We can get this done.
They may take our lives.. but they will never take our FREEDOM!!! ...

got a little carried away there.

Here's my gripe what if someone was trying to get a photo in say a robbery and be a good person or whatever, dude caps them. YAY! idiots...

Isn't it a law or industry practice to not allow the camera to go silent so that people can't be creepers and take underskirt phots and the like.

apparently so in a few countries...

I find it so stupid I went Android to avoid crap like this.

I have to use mine for work at times and am in situations that are not good to have BEEEEP BEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEEP CLICKCLOCK

how about this instead of ruining things for everyone, just start lopping off perverts and pedophiles right hands or left hands depending on dominance instead of making crap stupid for 99.999999999% of the population to stop that fractional percent of creepers. Nanny crap like this pisses me off to no end. I literally carry a phone with no service (an arris) because it can go silent for what I need to now.

apps that attempt to do this.

Only one is successful as in doenst cause total freeze or disconnect your camera.

'smart black box' successfully has made videos without freezing phone. However only 3 free vids than you gotta pay.

"Simple notepad" is also a similar camera app. It has a specific setting to unlock the hardware lock on sound. It works but it takes 'burst photos'. The video locks up the phone requiring a bp. Also once booted you have to manually turn the volume back up. Video usually fails as a black broken item.

sca is yet another.

Takes silent photos but video locks phone up and the on video sound still clicks.

ssc what is also called spy phone lite or at least uses the same icon locks up phone. Though I think it did work at one time. It took photos with full sound. No sound elimination at all. Im pretty sure the original ssc has been copied and remarketed by the Chinese developers American contact but I digress.

Tried installing the 'silent camera' over at xda from link above for rooted phones but Rogue recovery kept getting a 'installation aborted' message.

So as of right now I know of no good alternative for photos and vid without sound. The silent black box worked fine but its only video.

I havent tried any pay apps.

Let me know of any solutions.

Can you not just find the *.wav file or whatever type file extension that is used for the sound and re-record that sound clip with a lower to almost nothing output and then rename that file to take the original file's place? That's what I did to one of my phones.

But on my current phone, although I can mute the shutter sound, I didn't like the boot or shut of sound, so I simply renamed the boot sound and the boot off sound to *.bak. I would think you could do the same for the camera shutter sound - no?

Yes, you probably need to be rooted.

FOUND IT!!!

Ok I mentioned I had talked to a Chinese developer. Sure enough someone ripped him off and is trolling his app in the market.

I emailed him and his is now called Julycamera.

And its AWESOME. It works 100 percent except two things. To get your system sound back on you have to kill the app in task manager. AND when you start video you still get that video hiccup sound but its not the camera sound.

AND he links us to how to remove sound completely ironically exactly how the above post is asking removing the sound files. Its a root command process though:

Twig's Tech Tips: Android: Disable camera sound

But with Julycamera I think theres no need to.

nice, I missed this, hadn't been on in a while.

I had to use my camera recently for something discreet at work, grab a screen shot from a program to show to my PM, had to cover my speaker and it still made a bit of noise, but luckily the person didn't hear... People making 3 billion changes and not letting us know.
