Is there any material advantage to carrying around your standard 'point and shoot' camera anymore versus one of these phones? Is the picture that much better? I have a Canon D90 which blows both types away, but thats nothing you put in your pocket.

The short answer is, "it depends".

Depends on if you want 1 device or 2. Depends on if your want something you can pocket or something you sling over your shoulder. Depends on if you're satisfied with taking 5 mp shots or you need something more. Depends on what you're going to use the final picture for...if you're just uploading to FB or sharing via email then the Epic is fine. If you're going to post process and eventually print then you may want your D90.

I could go on....

I own a Canon SD950IS point and shoot, and I have only used it once since I got the Epic.

The Epic takes great photos in good light. In low light, the photos are a bit grainy and noisy. The LED flash is not as good as a real xenon flash.

Although the Epic is no match for my Canon, it's great to finally have a decent camera that's ALWAYS with me. If I see something spontaneous like a beautiful sunset, I'll now be able to preserve the memory. Before, I'd only have a camera when at a planned event.

If you do any amount of travelling, a GOOD point and shoot is worth the hassle for the better picture quality. Plus, if you plan to take a lot of pictures, you won't be draining the phone's battery.

In summary -- if you take a lot of pictures, get a point and shoot. If you only take occasional pictures of your friends at parties for Facebook, the Epic is probably just fine. And for all photographers, having an "always with you" camera on the phone is great.

Well, I think there is some value in the point and shoot camera. My point and shoot still has better optics, 10x optical zoom, manual controls, larger sensor, more megapixels and whatnot than the camera on my Epic. The Epic camera is very nice, but the lens is smaller than my pinkie.

And yeah, my DSLR blows both of them away too with picture quality, but I don't always want to be carrying that around (along with all the associated lenses and other gear).

So, in my mind, the Epic is great for those unexpected pics. The DSLR is better for when I want to take really nice pics, but the point and shoot is still a nice option for mini-vacations or hikes or whatever when you want decent pictures, but don't want to lug around a big ol' DSLR.

Phone cameras are getting a lot better, but I don't think quality matches a good point and shoot yet. But more to the point, they lack a lot of flexibility. A major example would be the lack of optical zoom.

To me, the point of a quality camera phone is to have something for those cases in everyday life where you wouldn't carry a separate device. The camera you have is always better than the camera sitting at home. That's why I didn't get rid of my point and shoot when I got my DSLR.

If I want to upload something ASAP to facebook then I use the EPIC. But, when I want to zoom in, don't want to carry my phone, or there's poor lighting, then I use my Canon. At water parks I keep my phone in the car

megapixels ≠ better quality!

THIS... if I hear one more person try to explain to me why their camera is better than my camera or anyone else's camera just because the megapixel number is higher, I think I'll punch myself in the face (or them, that might be better)... DO SOME RESEARCH!!!!!

//end rant...

Relax, don't take it out of context. Someone commented with the following points to why his camera's better:
-better optics
-10x optical zoom
-manual controls
-larger sensor
-more megapixels
-larger lense.
It's meant to be looked at aggregated. Let's not derail this good conversation :D
