I am a great admirer of the photographic potential of the Nokia Lumias, and thought it would be interesting to compare the G4 to that Emperor of Camera Phones, the mighty Lumia 1020. :) This is nothing like a full comparison....I just took a few pairs of shots when I was out today. I may add more later under different lighting conditions.
Bear in mind that the 1020 produces 5MP oversampled photos.
First, the subject, as shot by the G4, then the G4 crop, followed by the 1020 crop.uploadfromtaptalk1433363830821.jpguploadfromtaptalk1433363868048.jpguploadfromtaptalk1433363888052.jpg

Yeah, a little over-sharp on the g4 but it's not worlds better on the 1020. A software update and they'd be super close.

The 1020 can hold it's own being a 2 year old phone. Is there a new version of the 1020?

The last I heard, Microsoft does not plan to produce a Lumia 1020 successor.

That's a shame @belodion. I still want to get a Lumia 1020 just to try it out.

BTW your area looks beautiful!

The camera may be lying. :)

Yes a great shame about no future 1020 replacement, if true. I had hoped that Nokia would produce something similar, but running Android, but I think it's just tablets.

A couple more, no crops. Both shot in Auto, as were the above ones. G4 first, then 1020.

I was comparing the crop/zoom on my new G4 to my Lumia 920 this weekend. IT seems once you get about 60% zoomed the photo on the G4 starts to get really grainy or "digital" looking and FAST. Whereas I can zoom all the way in with my 8.7 mexapixel 920 and not see anywhere near the same effect... Yeah I know I sounds like a Lumia Homer.... But I am!! Thoughts?

You can still buy them brand new. I bought one a few months ago for 300. Man, the Lumia 1020 takes AMAZING photos.

The 1020 still looks amazing, but loses in sharpness and definition a bit to the G4. The color seems off with the 1020 in that last pic without the zoom.

The camera on the 1020 is ridiculously good, I'll give it that. Too bad Windows.

How is the G4 in terms of speed?

I've noticed the Lumias frequently lead to missed shots because a subject moves before the camera is ready.

I find the G4 snaps photos much faster Laura. No real risk of losing the shot you want with it.

I get better-quality heavily-cropped images from my 1020 and 930 than from my G3. With the G4, the 1020 still has the edge, but the difference is less. I haven't done G4/930 comparisons. I compared the G4 to the 1020 because the latter is generally acknowledged as being the best of camera phones. I personally think it's remarkable that the G4 has acquitted itself so well....but I prefer to just stand back and let the two phones speak for themselves. And of course it's not just about detail and the extent to which you can zoom without serious loss of quality. With uncropped or slightly-cropped shots, other differences, such as colour, white balance, low-light performance etc., are more significant.

For me it's not about either/or....I enjoy both. :)

The G4 is faster than the 1020. You have to admire the unhurried way in which the 1020 processes each shot afterwards. You're happy to allow it to, because you know the image quality it's stashing away. :)

But not as fast - and I will not say this here - as my iPhone 4s. :)
