Can anything be done to recover photos/data from smashed Samsung Note 4?

[Android Central Question]

My partner has dropped her Samsung Note 4 which has smashed the screen and it no longer displays anything. (It switches on but doesn't seem to do much).

When plugging it in to a laptop via USB cable, nothing is found on the device.

Is there any way to retrieve the photos, etc? (Obviously they weren't backed up!).
