(as in hand over the cash, get a receipt and leave the store... without even
giving them my name? like buying a pizza)

Or must I activate the phone at the Verizon corporate store?

You should be able to just buy it out right without activating it. I've done it before.

You can buy it from Amazon without activation.

It depends where you go. A "corporate" (verizon owned) Verizon store is obligated activate the device to be sure there isnt any issues with the device making calls or connecting to data. But if you were to go to a "premium retailer" (3rd party) aka shockcity cellular or Z-wireless they will let you purchase the phone if you explain the reason. Im a sales rep at a ShockCity Cellular.

It depends on your luck. When I bought my Note 3 on release day, the csr just plugged in the sim, turned on the phone and left before activation completed. I could have cancelled activation and taken the phone home. Ymmv, this isn't standard, but you might get lucky, if that is what you want
