Can I buy the Evo and then return to my old phone?

Ok. So my sister and mom both are eligible for an upgrade. They are both happy with their phones and don't want to switch. But could I buy 2 evos for them but then sell them and they could return to their old phones?

When I got one for my girlfriend the rep said once I get it I can do whatever I want with it. Ordered it on one of lines with an upgrade and put on her account no problem.
