Can i even root?

Sooo ive been thinking about rooting but after reading a few threads i dont think i can. Im currenty on gingerbread from the OTA and have NEVER rooted before. Some threads have been saying u have to had rooted on 2.2 to have s-off....wild guess but is my only option to downgrade back to 2.2,do s-off or whatever,then update back to 2.3.4?

You are correct, you would need to downgrade to Froyo - then root with Unrevoked 3 and then load a rooted Gingerbread ROM. You don't want to load the stock update.

Actually I think ive found another way!! It worked fine!!
