Hello and welcome to Android Central Tony Schwab!:)

I am afraid that the rental company has blocked the phone's IMEI number because of non payment by the seller. The IMEI number is a unique identifier for each phone and once it is blocked, nothing you can do will change that fact. This is the first recourse for carriers whose customers break their contracts and for those who have had their phones stolen or lost. My guess is that the vendor knew that this was about to happen and sold it on quickly.Possibly, after receiving a warning from the rental company.

As per #1.7 of Galaxy S5, Fake Clone or Genuine - Dummies Guide...

"Also, if you are purchasing a used phone, you should check out the phone's history to see if it has been lost, stolen or blacklisted for non payment of contract. This can be done by obtaining the phone's IMEI number, enter *#06# into the dial pad, and then using a service such as CheckMEND"
