Odin is for Samsung devices. Don't use it on any device that's not made by Samsung - not even a Chinese Samsung clone. The fact that there's "s5mini" in the name doesn't make it a Samsung device. (Even a Chinese "Samsung S5" isn't a Samsung S5, it's a Chinese phone with printing on it that has the same letters as the Samsung S5.)

Towel Root will work on 4.4.2 with a kernel date of June 2, 2014 or earlier. It won't work on later kernel versions or other versions of Android.

am i on the rite path
If the device is running Android 4.4.2 with a kernel date of June 2, 2014 or earlier, you're on the right path with Towel Root. You're not on the right path with Odin regardless of what it's running because it's not a Samsung. At best, Odin won't recognize the phone. At worst it'll turn the phone into a box of useless electronic parts.

but this rootin stuff seems legit
Legally and technically it's legit - it's adding su to the /system/bin folder of the phone - where it's supposed to be in Linux (which is the phone's operating system). Warranty-wise it's not since, aside from HTC, rooting a phone voids all warranties. That mneans that if the paint peels off the case, and the phone is rooted, they won't do anything to help you. (There have been exceptions but don't count on it. Only HTC actually states that the only thing they won't cover if you root the phone is damage caused by rooting the phone, or by something you did that couldn't be done to an unrooted phone. IOW, if you broke it because you rooted it, it's not covered. If you rooted and the problem has nothing to do with rooting, it's still covered. Other manufacturers say that, even if the phone is 2 days old, if you rooted it, anything that happens to it is your problem.)
