Bluetooth Connectivity Issue

I'm just starting with a pair of Bluetooth headphones for music. I'm using the yurbuds leap paired with my Droid Mini. Software on the Mini is up to date. I find that if i put the phone away anywhere - even in my pocket - the music cuts in an out, as though the connection is poor. Has anyone else had this problem? Can I view the connection strength anywhere? Is there anyway to boost signal strength?
Is it possible this is an issue just with my phone, since it's a refurb? Or is it a problem with the headset?
