Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update, and a couple other questions

Ok so I just want to let everyone know that 1st of all I'm not very good at electronics in general, I can use them great but when it comes to updates and fixing problems and things like that I pretty much need the "dummy guide" lol. Anyhow I have a few questions.....1st is about the latest Lollipop Update. I did the "bring your own phone" deal and I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 with an AT&T Straight Talk SIM card. My question is what do I need to do to get the Lollipop Update on my phone, what exactly does the update do/fix/help with, and is it something that you recommend I need? My 2nd question is....recently I have noticed A LOT of ads popping up on my phone and everyday there's new apps that I didn't download and don't want so did I do something to cause this or?? Oh and one last question....does anyone know about the texts I and several other people have received from Straight Talk that say "as a byop customer you now get 5gb of high speed Internet" do I n=d to do anything to get the 5gb or is it just automatically upgraded to more? I appreciate anyo

Re: Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update, and a couple other questions

Welcome to Android Central! I'm not quite sure about the first question. Regarding the ads and the unwanted apps, chances are some app you previously installed carried some adware--I would start uninstalling apps one by one until this behavior goes away. Are the ads only popping up when you're in the browser, or also the homescreen?

If the message from Straight Talk is telling you that you now have that much data, then you shouldn't have to do anything. You can install the Straight Talk My Account app to track your minutes and data--see if it tells you that your data allowance is now 5 GB as well.

1. To update the device, go into system settings > about phone > software updates. If that doesn't work, then download Kies (Kies) and install it. It's a desktop client for your computer that will help you update the phone along with a host of other features, such as backup photos and files. Let us know what software version you have and we can find the appropriate changelog for the update.

2. I would suggest a factory reset. You may have inadvertently download or installed an app that is causing these problems. You can factory reset from system settings > security. Be sure to backup your data before hand.

3. Contact Straight Talk and see if they have any information for you on this. It may be automatic, but it's better to double check just to be safe.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Re: Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update, and a couple other questions

Welcome it the forums! As far as the update, you have a Verizon phone and will probably need a Verizon SIM to get an OTA update. The easiest and quickest thing to do, is to visit Best Buy. They have the Samsung Experience counter and they will flash the update on your phone. It takes 5 minutes.

As far as what the update does, there is so much. It can be compared to changes when Windows released 8. Things were a lot different from Windows 7, but things basically still worked the same.

I think it is best to always run the most up-to-date software on your phone.

The update is big, many S4 users get messages about not having enough memory to do the OTA update, so many uninstall some apps. Personally, I always reset my phone before updates, so that is never an issue for me. I sync contacts, calendars, etc to the cloud, those all come back when I log back in my phone. With my S5 it restored my phone pretty complete when I logged back in, including my Wallpaper. With my Note 4, I had to set it back up and go to the Play Store to download apps.

Anything you want to keep, pictures texts, etc need to be backed up. My pictures go to my SD card and I generally don't worry about texts, but now I have ever them sync'd with the cloud, do they come back. You can use Kies to back up your phone, and choose what to back up. I've only done that once, long ago. It backs up to your computer and you can restore, but I think it doesn't back up like it should. I just move any downloaded wallpaper, ringtones, etc, to my SD card and when I reset my phone or buy a new phone, they are still there.

The advertising popup, probably some app you installed has an ad popup.

I have no idea about the straight talk offer.

Re: Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update, and a couple other questions

Hello All, I have upgraded a couple of Samsung S4 phones to Lollipop successfully, however some of them upgraded but won't go beyond the login page that reads, "To start your Android, enter your password" and no matter how many times I enter this password, it only reboots and returns to the same page. What can I do, so i don't lose the data on these phones? I am open to any suggestions right now.
