I bought my unlocked Nexus 6 from Amazon. I want to update to Android 8 manually due to the possibility I wont get an update automatically. How do I update it

There is no version of 8.0 from Google, you'll need to find a 3rd-party ROM to install.

The OTA can be loaded without the need to unlock the bootloader (which wipes the device)

While this is correct, there is no 8.0 image posted there, which is what the OP was asking about.
That's right! Flaked on that... Yeah, it's unfortunate that they had to stop development on the 6. But they are at the mercy of Qualcomm... They dropped support for the SD805, so that pretty much forces Google's hand.

There are still plenty of third party ROMs though.

Not many yet. I think there's an AOSP Oreo version out, but it may still be in beta. I think I read something about it having WiFi or BT issues. Linneage has apparently scrapped 8.0 in favor of an 8.1 build, or 15.1 on the Linneage number line.

OP: Better off waiting til January to look for a ROM unless you're really determined and even-tempered. I'm waiting for a stable Linneage build myself.
