Can I port my number to a Gophone SIM without a phone?

I just ordered a Nexus 5 with the intention of activating it on GoPhone once it arrives and porting my Verizon number over. However, my Nexus 5 isn't going to arrive until just a few days after the end of my Verizon billing cycle. I also am under the impression that Verizon (or any carrier really) doesn't prorate your bill. Which seems to give me three options, none of which are ideal:

1. Pay for another full month of Verizon service, and have to use my old, broken *** Incredible 2 for another month while my fancy new phone sits in the box.
2. Port my number to GoPhone once my Nexus 5 arrives and have to pay for a full month of Verizon service on top of the 60 bucks for GoPhone service.
3. Cancel my Verizon service before the end of the billing cycle so I don't get charged for another month on my final bill, and lose my phone number.

What I was wondering, is if it would be possible to buy the GoPhone SIM card, activate service on it, and port my number over without having the new phone yet?

They will prorate your bill. Both Sprint and Verizon did for me when I left them in the years past. unless something has changed but I think they have too legally. (However I could be wrong I guess!)
