Can I root and delete unnecessary apps?

As you all know, the memory on the N1 is quite tiny. I am constantly getting memory shortage messages. The question is this: If I root, can I delete things I do not use/need?

The top candidates would be:
-- Amazon MP3
-- Google Books
-- Quickoffice

Quickoffice in particular would give me back 5MB if I could safely delete it.

Thanks,

Yes, if you root you can safely delete unwanted/unused apps. The three that you mentioned can definitely be deleted along with almost any other pre loaded application.

You can root and delete those app but it will not help you with low storage space message.
Those are system apps and you need more phone internal space.
If you're rooted ,look into rom which allow app on sd-ext

So you mean even if I delete the pre-installed apps, it will not free up memory space and eliminate the low memory warnings?

It seems the threshold is 20 MB. I am at 19 MB and can't clear enough cache, empty email trash, etc to get rid of the warning. It is a PITA, cause I can't update most apps either due to the size.

If I root, will that be good enough? I like Gingerbread. Or will I need to install CM7?
