In contacts I don't see any way to set a different ringtone for a contact. The same goes for notifications I don't see a way.
My Lg G3 allowed different ringtones, but not notifications.
The Samsung phones allow both to be changed on a per contact basis.
Am I missing something or is it in a different place?

Re: Ringtones & Notifications

If you go into the edit contact screen for that contact and select the menu dots to the right of the trashcan you can select the set ringtone option from there. I don't know it it effects notifications though, I haven't found a way to do that.

Re: Ringtones & Notifications

Ringtone: yes.

Notifications: no.

Notifications isn't built into AOSP. Google didn't add it to the Nexus. So Motorola didn't add it to their fork.

As mentioned you can change ringtones natively, but not notifications.

However, if you don't mind a 3rd party app - Ringo Lite will let you set both ringtones and notifications per contact, and it's free. Works fine on the Moto X (using it now)

Zedge (app) also works.

Where is the option to use your own tunes for ringtones?

copy your ringtones into the ringtones folder - I use ES File Explorer to access the folders as there is no file explorer built in

no groups?

You can't assign a ringtone to an entire group all at once but the groups exist.
Go into contacts and choose a contact...any one...choose to edit the contact...scroll down to the area where you can assign the contact to a group...icon looks like two people standing right next to each other...touch the down arrow and you will see the option to change groups AND...create a new group! Can't do much with them in vanilla Android but there may a third party app that will give you what you need to use groups as you want.
