Can I use my old Note 3 that no longer has a phone number for google maps on AA?

I got a new phone that doesn't work all that well with Android Auto. Also, I don't like the limitations that Android Auto puts on my phone. I'd like to do either of the following: (1) use my old Note 3 that has full functionality except that it no longer has a phone number as my AA device to access google maps. I tried doing that and found AA was lost, couldn't figure out where I was, even though my Note 3 accesses and can use google maps just fine on its own. Alternatively, I have a tablet with a phone number -- not the kind of number that you call, but one that lets me access my data plan -- and I tried hooking up that to AA. Wouldn't work. Don't know why. Help, anyone?
