I have Droid X that is 2.3.4 Gingerbread. I've never rooted this phone or modified anything. There is a lot of other info on the about phone section about system, kernel build versions, but not sure that is relevant. Not too long ago the News and Weather widget that was loaded on the phone by Verizon back in the day quit responding. Then the BBC app began closing every time you select a story. The NPR app never worked all that well.

The News and Weather widget/app can't be deleted or updated, just removed from the home screen. I can read news through the browser, but that is battery intensive on this phone. Weather channel app still works,

Is there something I can do on the phone to make News and Weather work again?

Welcome to Android Central! Is this a stock Motorola News and Weather widget, or is it the Google News & Weather app's widget? The latter is pretty good. If it's a stock widget, then you're probably just stuck, since a phone that old will almost always get left behind in terms of compatibility.
