Can Nexus 7 memory be expanded via USB

I have heard you can use a USB for expanding your storage. Is it possible without rooting, and how to do it.

I dont know if nexus 7 2013 can but i have a nexus 7 2012 and i can connect a usb stick to it (using an adapter) but i can only take information off it. I cant (sadly) put info on it. And i havent rooted my nexus 7.
