Can only receive email on mobile data

This has been driving me crazy for a while now.

If i am connected to my home wifi my LG nexus 5 will not receive emails. If i turn off wifi and rely on my mobile data then they come through without any problem.

Also if i am connected to my home wifi i cant download any images or videos that people send my through kik or whatsapp. But i do get the text messages that they send.

Well like i said i have no problem using messaging apps that require the internet to operate.

I only noticed this was happening because as soon as i left my house (and got outside the range of my wifi) i would be flooded with emails.

I was wondering if your phone was defaulting to mobile data if the home Wi-Fi wasn't working. But that wouldn't explain why you get texts but not photos using your messaging apps.
