Hello all

I have a dilemma that Im hoping you guys can help.

Currently I have 1400 min family share plan. Text message for family is unlimited I think for 20 a month. I've had it for several years and don't know exactly where it is.

I have two smart phones unlimited $60 a dumb phone 9.99 and another dumb phone that needed a 25 mb package 20.99 or close to that. I want the kids to get smart phones but that would be around 80.00 correct because the data and the extra line fees.

With the new family shared data I was wanting to keep my unlimited but my wife only uses 500mb a month. I wanted to know what my best options for plans were. My bill is currently 215-225 ish. I wonder if o could put the other three phones on a family shared data and keep my phone unlimited without it being crazy expensive.

If you have unlimited right now, your best bet is going to be to NOT make any changes to your plan. I'm in the except same boat. I have two smartphones and two basic phones, any my monthly bill is around $230/month. On this new shared plan to stay with the data we use, I'll be paying around $50 more/month. As long as I don't make any changes to my contract I will keep my unlimited data. Another thing I don't like is with this new plan you get unlimited calling and text messaging. I don't talk on the phone that much nor do much texting, so those two features are not important to me.

I know man we are screwed. My issue is my wife wants to change those dumb phones into smart phones. My plan is to trade my kids new smartphone galaxy s3 to my line and she can take my nexus.

Give us the break down of how many minutes, text and data each family member is expected to use and also if you want the kids to have smart phones or not. It is not clear from your post.

One option if I am understanding you would be to break your line with unlimited data off from the wife and kids as an individual plan and put them on a Share Everything plan with them all having smart phones. The cheapest you could do that would be $240 before taxes but it would mean that you would have to do pay as you go texts and they would only get 1 GB of data to share.

1) Individual plan for you = $70
- 450 voice minutes = $40
- pay as you go texts
- unlimited data = $30

2) Share Everything plan for them = $170
- 3 smart phones with unlimited voice and text = $120
- 1 GB of data = $50

For another $20/mo (which would be $260/mo total), you could have 1000 texts and they could have 2 GB of data to share.

I wouldn't mind them having smart phones but I do fear they would go over with less than a gig per kid. I go through about 2000 text a month if not more due to my nature of work.

As much as I hate this messed up family shared data it may be the cheapest option and hopefully I can get the kids an ics device and cap their data at like 1.5 a piece and my wife will surely be under a gig then I keep the rest.

You might also try contacting VZW corporate and explaining the dilemma that Verizon has put you in.

Executive Leadership

They usually respond within a few days. The corporate rep should be able to help you navigate this mess and put together the best package.

To upgrade dumb phones, I recommend buying used phones off of eBay or Craigslist. I have purchased two phones this way (one from each site) and saved money even compared to the subsidized upgrade price.

Thanks I emailed them my dislike off the new data plans and how I think it is stupid that I am not allowed to upgrade early from an old phone to a smart phone. But nicely ofcourse thanks.
