Can the Galaxy Note 2 switch radios?

The wife and I just got new phones. She got the Galaxy Note 2 and I got the Nexus 4.

I live in a half basement apartment that has 3 stories. So we don't get great signal in fact we can't receive calls. I noticed when I use a toggle to switch to "2G" I get much better reception and ty internet because I switch to edge.

I can't use those WiFi to cell service devices because we are using Straight Talk.

My question is, Can the Galaxy Note 2 switch radios? Or essentially do the same with out rooting?

I need this answered too. I have rooted my phone and I still can't find a way to switch it to 2G only, none of the switcher apps work. I'm on 4.2.2, if I revert to 4.1 will I get this option? My 3G signal is awful but I'm pretty sure it's picking it over the solid 2G signal.
