I have a Nexus 7 and am trying to export to a USB flash drive via a OTG cable. I am using Nexus Media Importer app. Not sure if I can export. My Nexus is stock not rooted.

If the app you're using allows you to choose the output path, yes. Otherwise, export to your SD card (the internal one in a Nexus), then move the file to the USB drive with a file manager app. No need for root either way.

If your connecting to a computer using the Media Transfer Protocol/USB feature in 5.0.2 you should be able too. You might run into problems if youre using windows 8.1 though..

Not connecting to a computer. I want to transfer from my Nexus to a flash drive via the OTG cable. I dont think nexus importer app allows. Maybe i need to try a different app. Which one should I try?

NMI does support writing to a flash drive. The author recently provided support for writing to NTFS-formatted HDDs:

Nexus Media Importer

I used NMI on a trip to transfer photos from my camera's SD card (using a card reader) to a flash drive (had to copy to the Nexus then to the flash drive).

As sparksd says, you can't. NMI is only an importer so you can't use it to export

Sorry, I wasn't clear. NMI can write to a flash drive - that's how I transferred from the N7 to the flash drive. I just tried it again to make sure it works. In NMI you have to go into preferences and check the "Enable Write" box.

This is exactly what I am attempting to do but with video from a Gopro. Which eats up memory cards quick.

I copied from an SD card in a card reader attached via the OTG cable to my N7; from there I copied to a flash drive. This works with files of any type - video, JPG, etc. Like I said, I first had to copy the files to my N7 and then from there to a flash drive, all using NMI.
