Can the white navigation bar with the keyboard be disabled? Galaxy 9s plus.

I'm using a Galaxy 9s plus. When my keyboard is open the navigation bar turns white and shows a down arrow. It works poorly for minimizing the keyboard, and I have to fight with it to get the black menu with the back arrow back. I often hit other things on the screen and it's terrible. Can the black nav bar be locked such that the white one goes away?

That is the standard behaviour and I don't think you can change it.
