Can you delete multiple messages at one time?

The owner's manual says:

To delete several messages on the All messages screen, press MENU
while on the All messages screen, tap Delete, select the messages you
want to delete, and then tap Delete.

But it doesn't really do that, it wants to delete entire threads.

I want to keep (for now) some of the messages in a thread, but not all of them and I don't really want to have to delete one at a time.

Anyone know if that can be done?

Thanks,
Howard

okay - hopefully this will help:

All messages screen - press menu and select delete. As you said, you can select which messages to delete. Notice, the "X" in the box is grayed out until you mark it. Once marked, the "X" in the box turns red. At this point, you can check off what ever you want to get rid of, and then press delete.

If you want to erase all threads, go to all threads, press menu - delete, and then press menu again and you'll see the option to delete all messages.

If you want to delete messages within a thread, go into the particular thread, locate the chat message you want to delete, press and hold to see the option to delete message. Only that message in the thread should be deleted.

Thank, but that still deletes all the messages in one of the threads. I want to delete multiple messages within one thread and it seems my only option in one at a time.

There is no "click" then "shift-click" to select a range of messages as far as I can tell.

Okay - got it. Download the sms app called Handcent_SMS. Once you have it, you can check off whatever Chat or thread by hitting menu and then "batch mode" . Whether its a thread or all threads, it works!

Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for.

I have another question for you. How did you find that? The marketplace search isn't very good. The "old" handango (and others, probably even iTunes) has much better organization of apps and searching. So how do you find an app that is specific to a type of function?

You're very welcome. funny you should ask - was just tooling around and happened to start with Market Place > Applications > Software Libraries. I browsed and found many apps that I was interested in.

Can't find this app!

I can not find that app you were talking about the Handcent one. I followed those steps in the market and it wasn't there. Now I have no idea where it could be. Unless it has been taken off the market. HELP ME!

Hi Howard
No need to download any apps. Go to your desired message thread in which you want to delete messages. Select menu key>more>delete. You'll get an option of delete selection.
There you go!

yes u can.. press and hold over text u want to keep, 'lock' it, repeat for any others worth saving and lock those too.. Then.. delete the entire thread... you will be prompted to delete ALL, including locked messages, or everything but the locked messages.. thats one way, without needing to get yet ANOTHER app..
