Can you play videos (say AVI or MPEG4 format downloaded on a PC) directly from a micro SD card inserted into the SD card slot on a SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab 3 or would the videos need to be transferred onto the internal memory ?

Yes we can, we can even whatch dvd movies if they are copied correctly, samsung's video playwr is going to find all he compatible formats and youll be able to find your videos directly on the app, to play dvds you need wondershare player

If you download a player app, like VLC, you can pretty much play any video format. You can put movies on your SD card or in tablet memory itself. MX player also works well, but may require downloading an additional file to decode all formats.

Word of caution: never remove the SD card while the table is on, unless you 'unmount' it first (settings-->storage-->unmount)
