Can you rename your nand backups

I do Know RA Saves Backups to a different file then Clockwork does...

Now I'm curious as whether changing the name of the nandroid folder when it was generated by RA has the potential of changing the MD5 is the same as Clockwork considering they work differently in saving these backups

so should you create a nand backup of every rom you try? I just have a nand of both stock rooted roms 2.1 and 2.2 but I don't have tons of crap that I need to save if I have to wipe it.
currently running fresh, this week that is

Yes you can change the name of the nandroid backup with a file manger without affecting the md5sum's. BTW try doing a md5sum on a file folder. The name of a nandroid backup refers to the folder which stores the serparate ".img" files, which are the backup. The md5sum's are done on the ".img" files. There is a txt file "nandroid.md5" in Amon-RA's which contains the individual md5sum's for the ".img" files. Just saying.

I was wondering about that. Would the following strategy work?

1) Wipe as needed and then flash a new ROM.
2) Use Titanium Backup to restore the apps and data you want restored.
3) When the new ROM is all fixed up how you like it, make a nandroid backup of it.
4) Repeat step 1-3 with a different new ROM.
5) When or if you decide to start using one of the previously tried ROMs again, instead of repeating steps 1-3, simply restore the nandroid backup of that ROM.

Wouldn't that work? Wouldn't the nandroid backup restore the custom ROM complete with all the apps and data you restored to it?

Thanks.

That would be great if this can be done. I can always try it I guess. By the way, I read that clockwork there were some issue with wiping dalvik-cache. Is that true and if so, has it been fixed. I havent used Clockwork in a while and have no issue with RA so I'm not sure why some prefer clockwork over RA. RA has an option to toggle to USB drive which I find useful.

Someone just posted a thread here somewhere (on my phone so I can't link) saying that clockwork wipes dalvik properly. I haven't personally checked the validity.

I prefer ra cause I'm an old school dude and ra was the only recovery available for most HTC devices before clockwork. It worked faithfully for me on hero and has never let me down on EVO.

Either way big up's to both devs for making cool products.

Yup you're right. After I posted and started reading the other threads I saw this.

It seems it does wipe but just doesn't show it.

Thats how I've been doing it, except the titatnium backup step. After I install a new ROM and set it all up. I then log into my AppBrain account and it installs all the apps I've had on my phone. Then I make a nandroid backup of it. It I want to go back to that ROM I just flash the backup image from nandroid. I have not had any problems with that procedure.

Great info, Im glad to finally hear some specific details regarding this...

Fairly new to androids coming from BB which I used to load different OSs on an almost daily basis so learning as I go.

If one does a back up of the same ROM on a different day does it wipe the existing back up or just makes a new one like it would for a completely different ROM? I am rooted and did a back up a couple of days ago and still trying to decide which ROM to flash. Baked Snack or Fresh 3.2. I like Sense(I guess I am in minority?) but would love to have the fps cap off.

When you back up with RA the backed up folder will be named with the date followed by 4 additional numbers. So if you back up twice in one day the way to tell which is latest is by the last 4 digits. It would have the highest number from the other back up that was done the sam day.

To give you my opinion between fresh and baked, I have tried a few roms like ava, calkulin, netarchy, vaelpak, lovers, cyanogen, and lastly fresh and each time I go back to baked. They are all great roms but I just prefer baked. It doesn't get top scores but is very smooth.

I assume that is the same with Clockwork recovery? I used Unrevoked 3.2 and it worked on the first try without any issues but do not have Amon RA.

I haven't used clockwork for a while and deleted all my backups from it so I'm not sure how the naming goes on it. I was able to get RA by flashing to Lovers ROM. It'll install automatically for you. I haven't really looked to see if there it has an install by itself since I already had it.
