canceling data plan?

How did you get the data plan in the first place? I will start there.

You have to. Verizon requires you to sign up for at least the first month of data when buying the no-contract Xoom. Although, there was one member on here who cancelled their data plan a day or two later and after a few phone calls and reimbursements didn't pay for anything.
 
I canceled mine the same day at launch. Just call Verizon customer service. Hit #0000# to skip to a live person. Also fully reimbursed data and activation.

Whomever told you that you were required to have a data plan was mistaken. You were not required to.
