I'm going to let https://www.driveaccord.net/threads...uto-connection-issues-my-own-findings.526817/ do the talking for me, because the instances mentioned in that thread exactly describe my situation (2018 Honda Accord).
I pretty much always plug USB into my phone before starting the car.
Half the time the moment the safety messages are gone, Android Auto is up and running, as it should be.
The other half the time? Yuck.
I'll get messages of the type "Cannot connect to Bluetooth." Then every 30 seconds or so, my car display will say "Connecting..." and there will be a spinning circle graphic, and it eventually connects. So basically, based seemingly on fates and nothing else, my phone will connect the first time, or the second, or the third, or or or.
Even more frustrating is that even though I have a less-than-year-old rugged and short (I think 18-24 inches) cable, I basically can't pick the phone up (for example at a traffic signal to check email) without the Android Auto connection breaking - sometimes for a second or two, sometimes for minutes - because the Bluetooth connection is lost.
What's going on and how do I fix it? Is this a phone problem, Android Auto problem, or car problem?
