"cannot save attachment" message

I now can't open or save pdf files. could before. Droid Maxx.

A friend sent me an email with an attachment. When I click on it a box pops up with an option to view or save. When I click on either one a red box at the bottom of the screen reads, "cannot save file" then disappears. What can I do? Thanks for any help you can provide. This is my first Android os phone.

The attachment is a pdf, I presume? If you tap View, does it tell you that you don't have an app installed that can open it?
