Can't assign ring tone to contacts

[Android Central Question]

I've had this problem on two different phones now. I go to the contact I want to add a ringtone to and tap "edit" then more, I tap on "ringtone" and I'm kicked out of the edit screen back to the contact. If I try again, the contacts app stops running and I'm notified that it keeps stopping. I saw another post that says to turn off "contact ID" setting but no such setting exists on my phone. Is this a problem with my phone, or am I just missing something?
