Can't get .avi playing in Chrome

I am trying to get .avi files to play in Chrome so I can stream it to my Chromecast I just got. I have installed Divx and VLC trying to get it to play but it just downloads the video instead of playing. What am I doing wrong? It's driving me nuts! The plugins are showing in chrome and I even tried disabling all the other plugins except one of the video plugins at a time. No Dice.

I know it will play mp4's but I don't want to regularly have to convert movies. Thanks for the help.

I know that Chrome doesn't play all formats in the browser. I can't recall if AVI is one of them, but that wouldn't surprise me.
