Can't get google maps compass to calibrate?

My google maps app has been completely confused lately and does not know where the heck I am. I see that the blue beam in the app is very wide, and I gather this means the compass needs to be re-calibrated. I checked and confirmed I have the latest updates on the app. I tried just rebooting. I tried the "figure 8" motion repeatedly, but nothing seems to make the blue beam any narrower. Any suggestions on how to get my google maps working again?

Maps doesn't use the compass, it uses your motion to determine direction. If you're not moving, the "direction" is meaningless.
