"Can't Open Microphone"

I'm not a techy, but I really like the speech to text texting. The last few times I've tried to sent a text via this method I get an error message indicating it can't open the microphone. I can't use the microphone on Google Now either. Any suggestions? I've rebooted the phone twice with no success.

I couldn't wait for a response so I did a full reset. I lost some pictures, but I can get them back. Not only did it allow me to use the microphone again, but my battery life is greatly improved. Next time will save all the photos and music beforehand. I really like this phone but was getting frustrated not being able to use my favorite functions. :-*

I was having the same problem on a Nexus 4. For me rebooting was enough. Not just pressing the power button but holding it down for a few seconds until it prompts to power off the device. Once off hold the power button again to power up the device.
