Can't put a password on my phone!

My phone is one swipe screen and to change it asks for a password I tried my old one (the only one I have ever had on my phone) but it won't work what do I do? I have reset it and this is an ongoing problem I am 100% sure my old password is right. My phone is a Galaxy J16 if that helps

To change from swipe to password you have to put in a password, then confirm that password by entering it a second time.
