I've been trying to "send tracks to gear" using the gear manager app but my google music doesnt show up in the gear manager app. On the moto 360 I could send music over within google music. How do I get my downloaded google music to show up in Gear Manager so that I can send it to the gear s?

Solution: download music/albums to PC hard drive via google music chrome app. Manually transfer music files to Gear S from PC via USB connection.

Would be great if there was a way to transfer from phone...

I have not tried this but couldn't you download the music files you want from Google Music to the native music app your phone? Within Gear Manager set the music option to auto download and it will transfer files from the phone to the Gear anytime the phone and watch are being charged up at the same time.

I will give it a try once I get home, but it's the solution I think would work easier than what you described using your pc?

It could be just where you have your files saved. I have to find mine in Your Files or whatever file explorer you use, and copy them to SD card> Music or Music in the Root directory, since Gear Mgr seems to disregard all other directories.
