When I am out of data service I can't send sms, non mms. I can make calls just fine. Tested it at home. I have tried using Android messages and the stock app.
It's fairly annoying, any way to fix this. Unlocked on T-Mobile.

I noticed that the message you're replying to is a MMS... is your app set up to use MMS to reply to MMS or group messages? That might be why it's failing with no data.

Also, try turning WiFi calling on/off and, if active on your line, turning Digits Off and On. For me Digits only screwed up messaging.

I don't have the option to reply to mms with mms. I wasn't responding to a mms, just a basic text. don't have digits.
I will try it without WiFi calling and see what happens. thanks.

Dooki, if the text is more than 160 characters, and you have the texting app set to not break up messages, they go by MMS - which needs data. Look in the texting app's settings for something about splitting texts or not.

My screenshot shows the text I was trying to send. 8 characters.
I wonder if it has something to do with my being in att service area

Only time I've had issues sending texts was when roaming in China... but that wouldn't send with our without data, it just wouldn't send. Had to reboot the phone and once it connected back to the network it was OK.

Or if you're on WiFi calling and you have it set up to never use cellular network for calls, that will also 'kill' messaging unless you have data on your WiFi.
