Can't sync contacts with whatsapp

[Android Central Question]

I have just got an Android phone for the first time. I have saved all my iphone contacts and imported them to my phone, but they don't seem to appear within whatsapp. In fact, they only appear when I go into the google contacts app.
I have selected 'sync' next to Whatsapp in Google Contacts but it hasn't worked.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Go to Settings>Apps, select WhatsApp, then Permissions, and make sure it has permission to access your Contacts.

I moved this to the WhatsApp forum for more specific traffic.
