Can't transfer photos from internal phone storage to laptop (HTC One M8)

I have an HTC One M8 and am trying to transfer my photos to my laptop. They are on the internal storage I believe. I did not buy an SD card. I tried everything to transfer them and the photos do not show up in the directory to transfer. I have almost 2000 photos and 130 show up. They must be stored differently or re-saved somehow. I tried the HTC Sync manager which keeps crashing and closes. I tried a USB cable with several phone apps, only the 130 showed up. I tried bluetooth and went into explorer. Again, only 130 showed up. I worked on this for over 3 hours and can't figure it out.

The photo properties says: /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/100MEDIA
When the file list shows up on explorer...I see DCIM, but the subfolder is not there.

Any ideas?

I am having the same issues on my Nexus 6p. I can find them in the Photos app, with ES Explorer, etc, but cannot find them in the DCIM folder on the PC.

Anyone have any ideas here?

The count of pics on the phone means on the entire phone, which includes pics downloaded by your web browser (like the little white shopping cart at the top right of this page) and are hidden because you don't want to see them (or deal with them) as pictures.
