I keep getting the prompt to update to 5.1.1 when I accept it reboots to the android upgrading screen and then it says error then reboots back into the OS. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Okay looks like the phone has an unlocked bootloader. I am not familiar with tinkering around with root and everything. Would this cause the update to fail?

Did you get the phone from someone else, or brand new? If it's rooted and there's a custom ROM installed, that could cause an OTA system update to fail.

Even rooted phone with vanila android will cause issues with OTA update

Yes, if there is ANY change in the OS from the factory, the update will not install. If the bootloader is unlocked and the phone is NOT rooted, then you can use Nexus Root Toolkit to sideload the OTA update. If the phone is rooted then you will have to unroot it first, which you cal also use Nexus Root Toolkit to do.

Yes I bought the phone from someone. I know the bootloader is unlocked. How do I tell if it is rooted?

OK I relocked the bootloader and it still fails when I try to run the update. Any other thoughts I do not know what to do now.

To quote Android Lee above, "if there is ANY change in the OS from the factory, the update will not install."

The person you bought the phone from may have sideloaded something that's not standard on factory Nexii, or s/he may have even tinkered with lines of code to modify something. If you can, you might want to ask the person who sold you the phone about any changes s/he may have made.

Thanks for all of the tips. I ended up sideloading it with the nexus root toolkit.

I appreciate everyone's ideas.
